Celebrating John MacLellan: A Legacy of Compassion and Dedication
John MacLellan, President and founding owner of Broadway Carpets, embodies a profound commitment to kindness and community. Here’s a heartfelt tribute to his inspiring journey and his deep-rooted connections:
Founding Broadway Carpets: A Journey Rooted in Quality and Care
In 1980, John MacLellan, along with Larry Kelsey and Bill Finley, founded Broadway Carpets on Broadway St. Starting humbly as “Carpet Headquarters,” the company quickly grew into a renowned showroom and warehouse, now known as Broadway Carpets, renowned for its exceptional service and quality.
A Family-Centric Culture: Where Every Employee Is Valued
At Broadway Carpets, employees are more than a team—they’re family. This close-knit culture, cultivated by John, Larry and Bill, fosters trust and support, ensuring every voice is heard and valued. John’s belief that “being nice to people is a lost culture” permeates every interaction, creating a workplace where kindness thrives.
Personal Inspiration: Jimmy Mac, A Beloved Brother
John’s dedication to Sertoma’s mission is deeply personal. His brother, affectionately known as Jimmy Mac, had Down Syndrome and profoundly influenced John’s life. Despite initial challenges, Jimmy’s infectious spirit and the unwavering support of their family shaped John’s values of kindness and humility from a young age.
Jimmy’s Journey: Shaping John’s Compassion and Advocacy
Jimmy attended Elmwood, a special school, and later found purpose at Sunshine Industries. He lived at home until his mother’s illness necessitated a move to a group home—a community akin to Sertoma—that enriched his social life and brought him joy. Jimmy’s life and John’s care for him continue to inspire his commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities.
Rob MacLellan: Continuing the Legacy
John’s son, Rob MacLellan, carries forward the family legacy at Broadway Carpets West as co-owner and manager. His leadership ensures the same dedication to quality and customer care that defines Broadway Carpets. Together with Scott Bacon and Bo Perkins, Robert upholds the values instilled by his father, fostering a supportive environment where employees thrive.
Beyond Business: A Life of Fulfillment and Family
Despite scaling back to 20 hours a week, John remains actively involved in Broadway Carpets, continuing weekly meetings with longtime partners every Wednesday and enjoying moments with his wife of 45 years, Cindy, on their 25-acre property. His dedication to excellence and community is a testament to his enduring legacy.
A Lasting Impact and Continued Dedication
John MacLellan and Broadway Carpets have thrived through decades, driven by their reputation and the community’s trust. His unwavering dedication to quality and compassion ensures that his impact on both business and community will endure for years to come.
